ACTRA demands action on inaugural National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

TORONTO, ON (September 30, 2021) – Today on the inaugural National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, created in response to the Commemoration Call to Action 80 from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 2015 report, ACTRA is calling on all levels of government to take immediate action to redress centuries of injustices against Indigenous Peoples of Canada.

“The establishment of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation marks a long overdue but important step in the reconciliation process with Indigenous Peoples of Canada,” says ACTRA National President Eleanor Noble.

“In addition to honouring the survivors, their families and communities and reflecting on the lives lost at residential schools, we must ensure the tragic history and ongoing shameful legacy of residential schools is never forgotten. It is also an opportunity to demand immediate action from our governments to continue the reconciliation process,” added Noble.

ACTRA is strongly urging our federal, provincial, and territorial governments to quickly implement the remaining Calls to Action in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 2015 report and the 231 Calls for Justice in Reclaiming Power and Place: The Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls 2019 report.

ACTRA reminds governments, throughout this process, we must follow the guidance of Indigenous Peoples of Canada and ensure there is accountability and a continuation of the healing process. Through their guidance, they will help us build a new relationship based on equality, equity and respect.
