August 23, 2023 – This Friday, the Alliance of Canadian Cinema Television Radio Artists (ACTRA) will hold a solidarity rally in support of striking Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and Writers Guild of America (WGA) members.

This rally coincides with day 486 of the unlawful lockout of ACTRA performers by the Institute of Canadian Agencies (ICA) and the brand advertisers they represent.

“ACTRA stands in solidarity with SAG-AFTRA and the WGA. The issues they are fighting are our issues. Advertising Agencies, studios and streamers need to stop their corporate greed, making huge profits at the expense of our livelihoods,” said Eleanor Noble, ACTRA National President. “Enough is enough! It’s time to get back to the table and make a fair and respectful deal with us.”

SAG-AFTRA National Vice President, Los Angeles, Michelle Hurd will join Noble and many other ACTRA Members and sibling unions for this rally in downtown Toronto as ACTRA exposes advertising agencies, studios, and streamers for their corporate greed.

The SAG-AFTRA strike began over a month ago, while writers have been on strike for nearly four months and ACTRA performers have been locked out for 16 months by the ICA.

MEDIA ADVISORY: ACTRA ESCALATES WENDY’S BOYCOTT

August 21, 2023 – On Tuesday, August 22, ACTRA, the union representing performers who make commercials, will be demonstrating outside multiple Wendy’s Canada locations across the country to bring public attention to the ongoing labour boycott of union-busting brands. Wendy’s fast-food outlets are one of the major brands using an advertising agency that has locked out ACTRA members for more than 16 months.

“Wendy’s Canada is working with a union-busting advertising agency McCann who is directly damaging the wellbeing and livelihoods of thousands of ACTRA performers,” said ACTRA National President Eleanor Noble. “In an attempt to bust our union, for 16 months the ICA has shamefully refused to bargain fairly with ACTRA. We are urging consumers to take their business elsewhere.”

Summer Update from National President Eleanor Noble

Hello ACTRA members,

What a summer this has been.

SAG-AFTRA went on strike, taking on the studios just as we were invited back to the NCA bargaining table by the ICA. The good news is that the media interest over the SAG-AFTRA strike has allowed us to shine an even greater spotlight on our lockout. We have done many interviews on all forms of news media outlets (radio, broadcast news, etc.). With each opportunity, we highlighted that ACTRA members have been in a 16-month illegal lockout by the ICA. We will keep doing our due diligence in taking advantage of every platform to get the message out.

On that note, ACTRA Toronto, UBCP/ACTRA, and ACTRA Montreal are holding an ACTRA Day of Action to protest locked out engagers. ACTRA Toronto and ACTRA Montreal dates are scheduled for Tuesday, August 22 with the UBCP/ACTRA date TBD. Please look out for further details on the time and location. As well, we encourage you to share our social media posts to help rally people to these important events for our commercial sector. Friends and family are welcome to attend in support of ACTRA performers and to end the lockout.

We continue to stand in solidarity with SAG-AFTRA and the WGA during their strike and are watching negotiations closely. In case you missed it here is the latest update from the Writers Guild of America negotiating committee after returning to the table with AMPTP Friday.

As a sign of our support, we are planning a cross-Canada rally that we hope will take place on Friday, August 25 to show solidarity with the SAG-AFTRA & WGA strikes. Once again, when the details are confirmed, it would be great if you could share them widely on social media.

We will provide an update on the NCA once we are out of the current blackout. Please visit www.actra.ca/nca/ for the latest updates and FAQs.

Until then, thank you for your continued support and solidarity. These are interesting times, and we are doing everything necessary, at this critical point of change in the evolution of our industry, to protect ACTRA and its jurisdictions in all ways possible.

THE ART OF BARGAINING

At ACTRA, bargaining is all about strategy and leveraging our collective power to always get the best possible deal for members. Solidarity is the key to our power and plays a huge role in helping us succeed.

After last’s weeks ratification of the NCA renewal, the bargaining team is focused on preparations for upcoming bargaining with the ICA and ACA to get a fair deal to bring back to the membership. Until that happens, we ask that you continue engaging and stand in solidarity with your bargaining team.

This is an important time in the life of the union, and we are committed to keeping ACTRA membership informed as we move forward collectively. On July 11-14 we will go into another customary blackout while at the bargaining table. This blackout covers negotiations only and does not hamper us from continuing to share information on the fight to end the lockout, the boycott of union busting brands and other work of the union. While we negotiate, it is important to keep the pressure on the ICA and advertising agencies that continue to lock out ACTRA performers. When these four dates are finished we will report back to ACTRA members.

“In my experience, a communication blackout is not only customary but essential to facilitating blunt and productive conversations that can actually expedite the process of getting to an agreement, particularly on contentious issues,” said Marie Kelly, ACTRA National Executive Director.

“During negotiations, sharing our strategy, proposals, pressure points and tactics would put our members at a significant disadvantage at the bargaining table,” added Kelly, who serves as ACTRA’s lead negotiator.

Our lead negotiator is not alone in her views. It is the cornerstone of almost every set of negotiations in North America and widely viewed as a key element of labour negotiations.

“The parties need to have a mutual understanding about the confidentiality of discussions at the bargaining table,” wrote John Sanderson and William Cole in “The Art of Collective Bargaining,”

In their textbook they explain that when confidentiality is breached during negotiations, employers “will hesitate to engage in open and frank conversations. Negotiation leaks will have a chilling effect on the negotiation process and will make future progress and agreement much more difficult.”

In Vancouver this week, members of a newly established UBCP/ACTRA organizing committee launched an in-person outreach campaign to non-union performers. On Tuesday, they were on the ground training member organizers who are speaking to non-union performers at callbacks and networking events hosted by UBCP/ACTRA. Over the next few weeks, they will continue this work to talk to non-members about collective power, and what our union can do for them.

Let’s keep engaged and committed to ending this unprecedented and unnecessary lockout of ACTRA members!
